Kelly Cork - www.therain.com.au
In the misty hills of Maleny, in the back of a
motorcycle workshop, there was a man and his guitar penning songs
of love gained, love lost, and the mysterious and sometimes cruel
irony of life's journey. The man's name is Kelly Cork, Guitarist,
Singer, Songwriter, Mechanical Engineer, third generation Malenyite.
Born and bred in the hinterland, Kelly started
strumming the guitar as a youngster and by the age of fifteen was
regularly requested to play at parties and clubs. In 1983 he formed
the band Barbed Wire playing mostly covers and touring around the
South East QLD area. He later formed Lisa's Ordeal with Lisa Fitton
and co-wrote some of the songs for her album 'Life at the Blue Moon
Cafe', which has been popular with community and country radio stations
around Australia. Kelly's song writing talents and guitar prowess
have become legendary, and word is spreading fast.
Tom Richter
Tom's music career followed the classical path
of the child prodigy- NOT! An impromptu concert for his parents
at the age of nine (miming to Kiss Unmasked with his little brother
armed with tennis racquets and risking long term tongue injury),
crying his li'l heart out over Slim Dusty's "Rusty, it's Goodbye",
mesmerised by the workings of his Dad's reel-to-reel tape recorder,
kicked out of music class in Primary School for making the pianist's
life a misery (sorry, Mrs Beausang) and pretending at High School
that he didn't secretly like ABBA and the Bee Gees.s
Somehow overcoming two minor musical deficiencies,
rhythm and pitch, Tom became a serious guitar addict, to which his
parents and anyone who ever shared a house with him will attest.
He played his first gigs while still at school in Maleny (a country
wedding during which the groom attempted to climb a wooden pole
in the middle of a hay barn sticks in his mind).
Tom began teaching the guitar in his early twenties
and is still making a living as a full-time music teacher in Maleny.
In the last few years, Tom has widened his musical focus to embrace
the harmonica, lapsteel and mandolin. Songwriting has become a fascination
(he is exactly 23.78 times slower at composing than Kelly Cork,
confirmed by independent laboratory testing) and his harmony singing
is progressing (thanks Greg and Tracy Sweetman).
Peter Hudson - www.peterhudsonart.com
I was born in Townsville, and lived the early years
of my life in Northern and Outback Queensland.
When I was about 9 or 10 I remember a team of house
painters coming to work on my parents' house. One of the painters
would use up the last of his paint by slapping up small paintings
on bits of cardboard or plywood. Watching these images come alive
was my first encounter with art, a powerful and seminal experience
for me. I was totally captivated and I know my fate was being forged
as I saw this man quickly and magically create horses and landscapes.
Later in High School I developed a strong interest
in drawing and music. I started playing drums and joined my first
band.
In 1969 I began full time studies at the Queensland
College of Art in Brisbane. I studied graphics, design and illustration,
with the intention of becoming a commercial artist. In my final
year at Art College I realised I really wanted to be a painter,
not an advertising man.
I worked for a short time as an illustrator, then
moved back to North Queensland and started a jewellery apprenticeship.
Up until 1989, I worked as a jewellery designer
and musician, painting only part time, then 1 moved with my family
to the town of Maleny to devote all my time to art and painting.
I'm still living and working in Maleny.
